Biomin^® pHD is a urinary tract acidifier for breeding sows, comprising an inorganic acid, a blend of anionic substances and natural plant extracts.

Purpose

Bacterial infections in the urogenital tract may result in sow fertility problems. About 15% of sows suffer from urinary tract infections (UTI’s) and in problem herds, this could reach up to 40 %. UTI’s are considered predisposing factors for upper genital tract inflammations, which could also lead to Postpartum Dysgalactia Syndrome (PPDS). Consequentially, it leads to increased non-productive days, early cullings and decreased litters per sow per year.

Biomin^® pHD has been shown to improve sow productivity, prolong a sow’s productive years and improve litter performance. The reduction of bacterial burden improves urogenital tract health in breeding sows and leads to cleaner farrowing crates. Litter performance is enhanced due to the shorter farrowing time, better colostrum assumption, higher milk yield and lower rates of bacterial infection for piglets.

Mode of action

The effect of Biomin^® pHD is triggered by two mechanisms: the modification of the anion-cation balance (ACB) of the diet and anti-adhesion effect. The alteration of dietary ACB decreases the urinary pH, creating unfavourable conditions for pathogenic bacteria. At the same time, this stimulates the ability to mobilize calcium, which is essential for muscle contraction at farrowing.

The active substances of plant extracts inhibit the adhesion of pathogenic bacteria to urinary tract cell walls, a critical step in the pathogenesis of UTI´s.

Product

Biomin^® pHD is a powder product administrated either into compound feed or as a top dressing. The product is safe and easy to handle, with no side-effects or withdrawal period.

It is recommended to use the product:

1. a week before critical production stages such as farrowing and mating,
2. twice a year in spring and fall to reduce general bacterial burden in barns,
3. after therapeutic drug administration to selectively promote beneficial microflora in the urogenital tract.
