Young animals have a remarkable preference for sweet taste. This is especially true for pigs, but also for calves. The palatability of a feed is positively correlated to the taste experienced by animals. In this respect, using highly palatable flavor additives to increase palatability helps to increase feed consumption. Unfortunately, saccharin, which is even now the most stable and inexpensive sweetener has a bitter-metallic after taste nethat the animals do not like.
