Taste is the primary driver for food acceptance or rejection – the better the taste, the more pleasurable the meal. This applies not only to humans, but of course to animals as well. Tastier feed will increase feed intake, which provides the animal with more nutrients, resulting in higher yields.
For decades, aroma substances have been used in animal nutrition to improve feed palatability. In the past, young animals (piglets, calves) were the focus of product development. Additionally, efforts have been made to standardize the taste of the ever-changing ingredients in feed production in order to achieve uniform feed intakes. At the beginning of the 1980's, the market for highly concentrated, liquid flavors developed rapidly, thus the cost of flavoring could be reduced with good results.
Other important areas of application have been medicinal and mineral supplements. Also, here it is essentially about optimizing feed intake. It makes sense, especially with chemically reactive mineral mixes, to stabilize flavorings through microencapsulation. The appropriate procedures have proven themselves in practice.
Another variant is liquid, oil-soluble flavors, for example, fat added during the production of milk replacers.
We define the products cited above as "conventional" flavors and making a distinction between "functional" flavors (Digestarom®). Functional flavors, in addition to improving feed palatability, have additional effects on the animal organism.
A large variety of conventional flavors are available in powdered or liquid form under the registered brand name "RevestArom®".
