Gram-negative Control

Salmonella

Increased Gram-negative bacteria in the intestine can result in diarrhea leading to wet litter and inflammation in the intestines. This has a detrimental effect on performance both in terms of growth rate and feed efficiency in broilers. It also results in egg production losses and fewer saleable eggs in layers and breeders due to increased numbers of dirty eggs.

Problems associated with Gram-negative bacteria on the farm may be caused by incorrect farm management and poor ventilation that increases the humidity in the house and consequently, more wet litter problems. Quality of feed and water, which includes contaminated ingredients and the lack of biosecurity, also contribute to this problem.

Improving biosecurity and ensuring that the correct management techniques are in place are important starting points to reducing the consequences of Gram-negative infections. In layers and breeders, diarrhea that leads to unwanted dirty eggs constitutes a real economic loss to the farmer.
