Despite being a worldwide problem, clinical mycotoxicosis is not a common occurrence in the field. However subclinical mycotoxicosis can affect poultry in many ways, ranging from immunosuppression leading to decreased vaccine efficacy, to fatty liver, buccal, comb and wattle necrosis.
The widespread use of antibiotics in livestock production has come under increasing scrutiny in recent years. In light of shifting consumer demand and regulatory pressure, there is a clear trend to reduce or completely remove antibiotics from production.

Discussions on biosecurity often neglect water and feed. Yet, these are two of the major vectors for disease organisms entering the farm. Feed can be contaminated by a range of pathogenic organisms which may or may not be destroyed during the feed manufacturing process.
Necrotic enteritis is one of the world’s most common and financially crippling poultry diseases affecting approximately 40% of commercial broiler flocks. Clinical outbreaks can cause mortality rates of up to 50% and has been estimated to cost the global broiler industry upwards of $5-6 billion annually.
Increased Gram-negative bacteria in the intestine can result in diarrhea leading to wet litter and inflammation in the intestines. This has a detrimental effect on performance both in terms of growth rate and feed efficiency in broilers. It also results in egg production losses and fewer saleable eggs in layers and breeders due to increased numbers of dirty eggs.
Egg shell quality is an important economic factor in both hatching eggs and table eggs. Some mycotoxins, like Ochratoxin A, can affect kidney function by impairing vitamin D3 production and consequently, calcium (Ca++) metabolism. This can lead to poorer egg shell quality, more breakage and reduced hatchability.
