In addition to the implementation and certification of environmental management system Opens external link in new windowISO 14001, BIOMIN has carried out a full life cycle analysis (Opens external link in new windowISO 14040 & Opens external link in new windowISO 14044) to quantify the environmental impacts associated with the life cycle of all products. With this, BIOMIN identifies and quantifies the environmental footprint from production, and weighs that against the performance enhancing effects of BIOMIN products in animals and the associated reductions in CO2 equivalent emissions.

Sustainability at BIOMIN and ERBER Group

Renewable energy in business

To address its own environmental footprint, BIOMIN started to invest in renewable energy in its day-to-day business operations. Office buildings and production plants are equipped with solar panels, better insulation technologies and capabilites for using bagasse biofuel for heat and energy production. As a result, more than 90% of the energy demand is covered by renewable energy sources.

At the new plant in Vietnam, office roofs are covered with grass, and the walls of the new facility are built of autoclaved aerated concrete blocks to conserve energy. Solar panels provide 30% of the energy that keeps the factory going.

The new BIOMIN headquarters, completed in 2015, has an insulated building shell, groundwater heating and cooling, and ventilation systems that include heat recovery and photovoltaic energy. The ERBER GROUP Campus is the first building in Austria to achieve platinum class LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification from the US Green Building Council.

Quality feed nutrition

Optimizing feed use and improving animal performance is linked to reduced GHG emissions from livestock operations. BIOMIN feed additives are designed to improve feed conversion and significantly reduce CO2 emissions in livestock production.

Comparative studies have shown that 1 tonne of CO2 emitted in the manufacture of a BIOMIN product yields an equivalent reduction in CO2 emissions by up to 128 tonnes in broiler production. Besides positive impacts on feed conversion and weight gain, trials have proven that the inclusion of a matrix-encapsulated phytogenic feed additive (commercially available as Biomin® P.E.P. MGE) in feed contributes to a significant reduction in ammonia emissions in swine production by reducing the levels of fermentation products and increasing protein digestibility.
