BIOMIN Mycotoxin Survey in US and Canada: March 2022 Update
Our March 2022 update from the annual Biomin® PROcheck mycotoxin survey comprising 286 samples of corn and corn by-products for the US and Canada is here.
04.03.2022US and Canada Corn Survey Report
Each sample was tested for 6 major mycotoxin groups of:
A-Trichothecenes (A-Trich): T-2, HT-2, Neosolaniol, Diacetoxyscirpenol
B-Trichothecenes (B-Trich): Deoxynivalenol (DON/Vomitoxin), Acetyl-deoxynivalenol, Nivalenol, Fusarenon X
Fumonisins (FUM): B1, B2, B3
Zearalenone (ZEN)
Aflatoxins (Afla): B1, B2, G1, and G2
Ochratoxin A (OTA)
Summary
The survey results represent samples sent in for surveillance testing only and does not include any sample submitted following clinical signs. Below we discuss trends of each of these feed ingredients regarding mycotoxin occurrence and contamination levels.
USA Corn
- Overall occurrence for corn samples:
Occurrence | 2021 | 2020 |
Total positive | 87% | 88% |
>1 Mycotoxin/sample | 54% | 49% |
- Occurrence status by mycotoxin group:
Mycotoxins | 2021 | 2020 |
A-Trichothecenes | 1% | 4% |
B-Trichothecenes | 69% | 58% |
Fumonisins | 61% | 64% |
Zearalenone | 27% | 20% |
Aflatoxins | 7% | 5% |
Ochratoxin A | 1% | 1% |
- Of the 219 corn samples tested, initial surveillance suggests that mycotoxin occurrence is relatively increased compared to 2020, with the greatest shifts in B-Trichothecenes (+11% points) and Zearalenone (+7% points).
USA Corn By-Products
- Overall occurrence for corn by-product samples:
Occurrence | 2021 | 2020 |
Total positive | 100% | 99% |
>1 Mycotoxin/sample | 100% | 98% |
- Occurrence status by mycotoxin group:
Mycotoxins | 2021 | 2020 |
A-Trichothecenes | 0% | 4% |
B-Trichothecenes | 100% | 98% |
Fumonisins | 100% | 97% |
Zearalenone | 89% | 85% |
Aflatoxins | 9% | 4% |
Ochratoxin A | 0% | 4% |
- Of the 56 corn by-products samples tested (primarily DDGS and corn gluten feed), initial surveillance suggests that mycotoxin occurrence is somewhat increased compared to 2020.
Canadian Corn
- Prevalence status on samples:
Prevalence | 2021 | 2020 |
Total positive | 100% | 91% |
>1 Mycotoxin/sample | 27% | 55% |
- Prevalence status by mycotoxins:
Mycotoxins | 2021 | 2020 |
A-Trichothecenes | 9% | 39% |
B-Trichothecenes | 82% | 82% |
Fumonisins | 27% | 30% |
Zearalenone | 27% | 21% |
Aflatoxins | 0% | 0% |
Ochratoxin A | 0% | 0% |
- Although a small data set, based on the 11 corn samples tested, initial surveillance suggests that mycotoxin contamination is relatively lower compared to 2020.
