BIOMIN Mycotoxin Survey in US and Canada: April 2022 Update
Our April 2022 update from the annual Biomin® PROcheck mycotoxin survey comprising 341 samples of corn and corn by-products for the US and Canada is here.
08.04.2022US and Canada Corn Survey Report
Each sample was tested for 6 major mycotoxin groups of:
A-Trichothecenes (A-Trich): T-2, HT-2, Neosolaniol, Diacetoxyscirpenol
B-Trichothecenes (B-Trich): Deoxynivalenol (DON/Vomitoxin), Acetyl-deoxynivalenol, Nivalenol, Fusarenon X
Fumonisins (FUM): B1, B2, B3
Zearalenone (ZEN)
Aflatoxins (Afla): B1, B2, G1, and G2
Ochratoxin A (OTA)
Summary
The survey results represent samples sent in for surveillance testing only and does not include any sample submitted following clinical signs. Below we discuss trends of each of these feed ingredients regarding mycotoxin occurrence and contamination levels.
USA Corn
- Overall occurrence for corn samples:
Occurrence | 2021 | 2020 |
Total positive | 90% | 88% |
>1 Mycotoxin/sample | 58% | 49% |
- Occurrence status by mycotoxin group:
Mycotoxins | 2021 | 2020 |
A-Trichothecenes | 2% | 4% |
B-Trichothecenes | 70% | 58% |
Fumonisins | 64% | 64% |
Zearalenone | 28% | 20% |
Aflatoxins | 7% | 5% |
Ochratoxin A | 1% | 1% |
- Of the 258 corn samples tested, surveillance suggests that mycotoxin occurrence is somewhat increased compared to 2020, with the greatest shifts in B-Trichothecenes (+12% points) and Zearalenone (+8% points).
USA Corn By-Products
- Overall occurrence for corn by-product samples:
Occurrence | 2021 | 2020 |
Total positive | 100% | 99% |
>1 Mycotoxin/sample | 100% | 98% |
- Occurrence status by mycotoxin group:
Mycotoxins | 2021 | 2020 |
A-Trichothecenes | 0% | 4% |
B-Trichothecenes | 100% | 99% |
Fumonisins | 100% | 98% |
Zearalenone | 87% | 85% |
Aflatoxins | 7% | 4% |
Ochratoxin A | 0% | 4% |
- Of the 69 corn by-products samples tested (primarily DDGS and corn gluten feed), surveillance suggests that mycotoxin occurrence is slightly increased compared to 2020.
Canadian Corn
- Prevalence status on samples:
Prevalence | 2021 | 2020 |
Total positive | 93% | 91% |
>1 Mycotoxin/sample | 29% | 55% |
- Prevalence status by mycotoxins:
Mycotoxins | 2021 | 2020 |
A-Trichothecenes | 7% | 39% |
B-Trichothecenes | 79% | 82% |
Fumonisins | 21% | 30% |
Zearalenone | 29% | 21% |
Aflatoxins | 0% | 0% |
Ochratoxin A | 0% | 0% |
- Although based on a limited data set of 14 corn samples, surveillance suggests that mycotoxin contamination is somewhat lower compared to 2020, with the exception of Zearalenone (+8% points).
